GENERALITIES
The Commune of The Guaitecas is located in the northwest of the Region of Aisén, and constitutes the door of north entry to this vast territory. Islands Guaitécas Actualmente it consists for more than 40 islands placed to the south of the Island of Chiloé, being principal " Guaitecas and Ascension "; in the last one Pto is located. Melinka, the Capital of the commune with a population of 2.000 inhabitants. The territorial surface is of approximately 459 km2, 90 % of the population of this commune is located in Port Melinka and Repollal. The whole territory presents a rainy - moderate marine climate (aprox. 4 m. of annual rain), formed by humid forests of great quantity of vegetation and scarce fauna. The wealth more important, undoubtedly, it is in the sea; in spite of the indiscriminate development of the marine resources many years, still they can be: hedgehogs, madmen, choritos, petty thieves shoes, oysters, clams, picorocos, different classes of seaweed, crabs and fish.
