Location
Nevados de Chillán is in south central Chile's Bío Bío region, about 400 miles (248 kilometers) south of Chile's capital city of Santiago.
Animals
At least 40 of the 149 mammal, fish, bird, reptile and amphibian species in Nevados de Chillán are at risk.
The huemul, an Andean deer that is Chile's national symbol, counts on the Nevados de Chillán for food and shelter. The endangered animal might look like a deer, but it behaves more like a mountain goat. An estimated 1,500 huemules still live in the high Andes of Chile and Argentina. Only 60 roam in the northernmost range of Nevados de Chillán.
The region also is key habitat for at-risk mammals such the world's smallest deer, the 18-inch pudú; the viscacha, a wild Andean relative of the domesticated chinchilla; and wildcats such the puma, güiña and gato colocolo. Rare birds such as the Andean condor, rufous-legged owl, Magellanic woodpecker and a forest hawk called the pequito are among the area's 90 winged species.
