Mapocho station the old railway station was constructed between years inaugurated 1904 and 1910 and in 1913. The idea was majestically to celebrate the Centenary of the Independence of Chile, giving him to the capital a new railway terminal. The construction of this station would allow Santiago to be connected with the cities of Mendoza, the port of Valparaiso and the cities the north of the country. The construction of the building was in charge of the Chilean architect Emilio Jéquier, who after to have studied in France in the heat of Beaux Arts, returned to the country influenced by the academy and lessons of connotado French architect Gustavo Eiffel. The central element of this work is the steel, which was used in the metallic shed that covers the present Central Ship and that lodged the platforms and terminals of the railway lines. The cover, that originally was vidriada to the way of the central hall of the Museum of Beautiful Arts, was constructed in Belgium. This one covers a longitudinal space with 218 meters in length and 17 meters of stop. It is conformed by metallic segments transparencies, labeled in base and peak. Nevertheless, the Maxima beauxartiana expression of the building is reflected in its main facade and hall of access. In 1987, the Mapocho Station let work like terminal of trains. From that date, the enclosure was left in disuse and total abandonment, in spite of existing several projects to qualify the place. Railroads of the state transferred the building to CORFO so that this one sold the building and it privatized it. In these conditions it received President Patricio Aylwin. In May of 1991 it was decided to call to a National Aid of Architecture to turn the place "a great cultural center and to conserve his patrimony like national monument.Of a total of 20 presented/displayed projects, the winning proposal corresponded to the group of architects conformed by Teodoro Fernandez, Montserrat Palmer, Rodrigo Perez de Arce and Ramon Lopez. The professionals approached the remodeling of the building with a minimum of interventions, revaluing the work of Emilio Jecquier and unifying their set. The project, supervised by the consultants of engineering Cade Idepe, reached a total cost of USS 9 million, and was made in three stages, finalizing the last one at the beginning of 1994. During first stage, remodeló only the facade of the building as much in its interior as outer. One of the few innovations that were made was the change of color of target to lúcuma. In this stage also the Seat of the Culture, located in frontis of the building and old hardstanding was reconstructed, that from its remodeling was constituted in a new artistic space. In the following stage the entrance hall was recovered, the Great Central Ship and the rooms of the second level. The copper glasses and ceiling were worked in the final phase. Between the characteristics of the building it emphasizes the use of typically Chilean materials: the present copper in the ceiling and the Oregon pine whereupon the seats, the marks of the windows and the rooms got dressed. It is possible to emphasize the complex work of yesería that was made in rosettes and moldings and the work of paving stones in the Seat of the Culture. Annexed space to the Cultural Center Mapocho Station This construction, that originally welcomed the house of station master and warehouses, extends from the ex- station towards the Park of the Kings (between the street Balmaceda and Plaza the West). At the moment one is working like theater space.
