Museum of Beautiful Arts was founded on 1880 and worked in the stops of the building of the Ex- National Congress by initiative of a group of Chilean artists. It was inaugurated with 140 works. Between 1887 and 1910 had its seat in the called building?El Partenón? in the Fifth Normal one, being transferred finally in 1910 to the present location becoming symbol of the Centenary. For the occasion, which it attended the President of the Republic next to other Latin American agent chief executives, they were exposed more than 2000 national and foreign works. He was constructed at the beginning of century next to other buildings public, parks and monuments for the celebration of the one hundred years of the Independence of Chile, to lodge to the Museum and the School of Beautiful Arts, the architect of this imposing construction was Emilio Jecquier, Chilean formed in France, that overcame the aid summoned for this effect and in which its main contendor was famous Alberto designer Montt Cross Of neoclassic style, the building of historicista character inspired by the academicismo of French with incorporation of elements of the Art Nouveau was constructed between 1902 and 1910 being inaugurated the 21 of September of that year. The most important element of the composition of the building, is the cupola of galvanized iron and glass that covers the central hall, made in Belgium and that knows clearly reminiscencias of the Petit Palais of Paris, from which it took the facade and the internal route of the building, in the outside stands out the bas-relief?Alegoría of the Beautiful Arts? that it crowns the main entrance, it builds of the Chilean escultor Guillermo Cordova and 22 medallones of mosaics representing famous painters, escultores and architects. In the wing the west, where from 1976 the Museum of Contemporary Art works was occupied by the School of Beautiful Arts, until a fire happened in 1969 destroyed mansarda where the factories were located. The Palace has two main entrances, its structure is constituted by brick walls of 0.80 meters reinforced with metallic beams and reinforced concrete. After the 1985 earthquake, due to as the building had to be closed temporarily, executed several interventions to consolidate its structure. The Museum of Beautiful Arts counts on 3000 works of art, between paintings, sculptures, engravings and drawings from the colonial time to the contemporary. Also it counts on an European painting collection. In first stage the Central Hall of great dimension is located and beauty, Chilean sculptures of the Academic Generation are exhibited (S. XIX and S. XX). In 2º floor is located the permanent Chilean painting collection. The Matta Rooms (subsoil), Chile, Nemesio Antúnez and White Hall exhibit temporary exhibitions of visual or foreign arts.
