Peru prez's website hacked with pro-Chile slogan |
LIMA: A hacker has repeatedly sabotaged the Peruvian president's official website, replacing the picture of President Alan Garcia with that of the father of Chilean independence, officials said on Wednesday.
The image of Chilean leader Bernardo O'Higgins (1778-1842) popped up in Garcia's stead on the site Tuesday afternoon, then several more times overnight, a presidential source said.
Next to the image of O'Higgins, a military commander and the first leader of an independent Chilean state, the hacker wrote: "Viva Chile, Mierda! (Long Live Chile, Shit! or perhaps, Goddamit)" a historic Chilean war cry and today a popular expression, particularly in sports stadiums.
Computer technicians reposted the original website pages following the hacking but were unable to prevent repeated sabotage hours later. On Wednesday, the site appeared to be in its original form, absent further interference.
An investigation was launched to find out how a hacker was able to breach the security system of the website and how to protect against further incidents, the source said.
Frictions between Peru and Bolivia go back to the 1879 War of the Pacific, in which Chile attacked Peru and Bolivia over a trade issue, and seized a portion of Peru's territory and Bolivia's outlet to the sea.
