La Serena - Elqui Valley |
It is 450 km to the North of Santiago in the interior of La Serena.
This valley is one of tourists most favorite destinations because it offers a wide variety of recreational panoramas, from relaxing and meditation in alternative health centers, looking at the stars under its clear blue sky present during the whole year in the Mamalluca tourist observatory, or knowing the facilities of the international astronomical observatory of Cerro Tololo; museums, specially those built to pay homage to our poetess Gabriela Mistral, Nobel Literature Award; visiting pisco or papaw producing plants; and windsurfing in Puclaro Reservoir (or damp).
Among other activities it offers agrotourism, folklore and craftsmanship in the communes of Vicuña and Paihuano.
La Serena is well known for its traditional architectural line with a colonial inspiration style. One of its main attractions is the 27 churches, some of which have been declared National Monuments The city coastline has large beaches and extended seashore along side the Avenida del Mar, which is well equipped with a great amount of lodging, hotels and restaurants.
A few minutes from La Serena we get to Coquimbo, the casino, located in front of Peñuelas Beach is highly frequented by tourists.
Other beaches in the nearby are La Herradura, Las Tacas, Totoralillo, Guanaqueros and Tongoy.Going farther North, the Humboldt Penguin Reserve invites us to go bird watching, and to observe seals and dolphins.
Near La Serena Andacollo is located, a small town well known for their religious celebration to the El Rosario Virgin.
This destination also gives us the opportunity to surf, and do other nautical activities such as swimming, sport fishing and high mountain sports.
