Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego
Tierra del Fuego - Cabo de Hornos |
Tierra del Fuego is located in the southernmost part of South America, to the South of Magellan Straits, and it is shared by Chile and Argentina, who are the owners of the western and eastern part, respectively.
The Chilean sector of the island corresponds to part of the Province of Chilean Antarctica, Magallanes Region and to the Chilean Antarctica. Its provincial capital is Porvenir.
In its beautiful landscape, practically unexplored, there is an alternation of natural attractions: the Magellan pampa with the first forests of the continent, the dwelling of an important community of guanacos (and of introduced castors that have multiplied and are a menace for the forests’ preservation); the lake area, with an abundance of trout, some of which weigh up to 14 kg, characterized by Lynch, Blanco and Fagnano Lakes; and finishing with the mountainous zone of Darwin Mountain Range, full of vegetation, to the south of Seno Almirantazgo and Lake Fagnano, with numerous fjords, channels the peak of the Darwin and Sarmiento mountains and the Marinelli and Brookes glaciers.
