 The Chilean Antarctica, last southern frontier of the world, is located 990 km away from Punta Arenas, and it is the most southern city of South American, Chile.
The country is the entrance door to the white continent, either by air (from Punta Arenas, a 4 hr. flight in Twin Otter airplanes), or by sea (3 days from Punta Arenas and only 2 days from Puerto Williams). Currently, both places are the starting point to bases Presidente Eduardo Frei Montalva and Professor Julio Escudero; both located in the “Villa Las Estrellas”, in King George Island, of Southern Shetland.
The boundaries of Chilean territory Antarctic are defined by Decree No. 1.747 1940 by the Ministry of the Interior of Chile, which states: "They are the Chilean Antarctic, or Chilean Antarctic Territory, all lands, islands, islets, reefs, glaciers (pack ice) and others known and available, and the respective territorial waters, within the limits of the cap constituted by the meridian 53 ° longitude west of Greenwich and 90 ° longitude west of Greenwich.
The Antarctica is a natural reverse dedicated to peace and science. There is a continuous scientific presence in the place, especially during spring and summer, as well as of tourist with an ever increasing interest for nature contemplation in its purest and most primitive condition.
Visitors are attracted not only for its flora and fauna so special that it can be observed in the isles and coasts of the sector, bur also for the natural richness of its ice deposits, that constitute the largest sweet water reserve in the world.
The Antarctica is a protected continent. Practically all activities carried out in its milieu, including tourism, are duly regulated. The aim is to keep this continent as free of pollution as possible and thus be the most uncontaminated in the world.
This is a territory of permanent scientific interest. The Antarctic Treaty, which includes 12 countries, settles the use of the territory for only scientific reasons. Of the 45 countries that form part of this Antarctic Treaty, Chile, among them, has to take care of compliance of the regulations stipulated by themselves during their periodical meetings.
